In India, federalism is practised by making three subgroups:-

(1) Linguistic states:- In this subgroups people belonging or the people who shares a common language, culture and geography could live in a same state.

(2) Language Policy:- Although hindi is our national language but still there are some states in which different languages apart from are being spoken.

(3) Centre -state relations :-It is an another way in which federalism is strengthened in practice. Although the powers are distributed among the union and the state government but still the Union Government has influence over the state in many ways.

Federalism in India is practised by the creation of linguistic states ,language policy and centre state relations. Linguistic states:- in 1947 ,the boundaries of several old states were changed in order to create new states . This was done to ensure that people who spoke the same language lived in the same state .
