HOW IS FOOD DIGESTED IN AMOEBA

In Amoeba, food is digested in the food vacuole by digestive enzymes. The enzymes from surrounding cytoplasm enter into the blood vacuole and break down the food into small and soluble molecules by chemical reaction. Thus, digestion in Amoeba takes place inside the food vacuole due to which the food dissolve( or food becomes soluble).

Amoeba is a holozoic and a protozoan.

  • The digestion is intracellular in amoeba since it is a single-celled organism. The food it takes remains in a food vacuole or gastric vacuole formed by the cell membrane and a bit of the cytoplasm. The vacuoles are transported into the cells by cytoplasmic movements. While the movement they fuse with lysosomes that contain enzymes such as amylase and proteinase. Therefore, the amoeba can digest sugar, cellulose and protein but cannot digest fats.
  • In the cytoplasm, food vacuole combines with lysosomes containing digestive enzymes. Here, the complex and non-diffusible nutrients are changed to simple and diffusible nutrients. The portion inside the food vacuole is acidic first but then becomes alkaline.
