The forest is considered as an independent unit because it has a ability to survive on its own. For example, a forest is formed of hundreds of different types of plants and one major trait of plants is their ability to prepare their own food via a process of photosynthesis which means forest can prepare its own food, recycle energy and nutrients and live on its own as an independent unit.
