Freshwater is obtained from natural sources such as rainwater , groundwater, rivers , lakes , seas , oceans and glaciers etc. This water is then separated from insoluble and soluble impurities by different processes including sedimentation and decantation. Insoluble minute impurities are separated by loading using alum. Various other processes involving the use of charcoal are followed such as boiling, filtration etc. Pure distilled water is obtained by the process of distillation.

After distillation, useful minerals such as calcium, copper, magnesium and zinc are added to water to provide taste and promote health.
