Gaseous nitrogen is not fixed by plant but by various micro organisms like rhizobium bacteria and blue green algae. Gaseous nitrogen is converted into nitrate and nitrite by these micro organisms. These are easily soluble in water and thus taken by plants through roots. These compounds help in the growth of plants.

The gaseous nitrogen fixation is caused due to some bacteria present in Leguminous plants its significance is the some plants and animals could not directly take the oxygen so they are broken down into nitrites and nitrates
