Chromosomal sex is determined at the time of fertilization; a chromosome from the sperm cell, either X or Y, fuses with the X chromosome in the egg cell. Gonadal sex refers to the gonads, that is the testis or ovaries, depending on which genes are expressed.......

How Is gender of a baby determined

  • Each Cell carries 23 pairs of Chromosomes, 22 Autosomes and a pair of Sex Chromosomes namely XX in Females and XY in males.
  • Gametes formed in the reproductive organs  have half the number of Chromosomes.
  • All the ovum would have X as their sex chromosomes, while the sperms would have either X OR Y  as their sex chromosome.
  • If X bearing sperm fertilizes a X bearing ovum the gender of the child would be female.
  • If Y bearing sperm fertilizes a X bearing ovum the gender of the child would be a male.

HENCE IT IS THE MALE GAMETE THAT DECIDES THE SEX OF THE CHILD...
