Globes are useful to have a realistic idea of how the seas and landmasses are situated on our planet Earth. It’s as simple as that. But in daily usage, globes are not very practical. That’s why geographers have developed maps, which are a more or less realistic representation of the earth’s surface on a flat support. Traditionally these maps were drawn on a piece of paper, but nowadays we use more and more computer screens. In order to limit the distortion between the real distances on the globe, and those represented on a flat support, geographers have invented map projections.
