Highly alkaline solutions have a high numbers of hydroxide ions(-OH) in them. The hydroxide ions are responsible for the alkalinity of the solution. The high concentration of the hydroxide ions can easily attack polar bonds of both inorganic and organic compounds resulting to their corrosive natures.
