Matter can change from one state to another if heated or cooled. If ice (a solid) is heated it changes to water (a liquid). This change is called MELTING. If water is heated, it changes to steam (a gas).

When ice is heated, then the ice particles gain kinetic energy and turn into water. This process is known as melting. When the water is further heated, then the water particles gain kinetic energy and break free from the interparticle forces. Once the particles overcome the interparticle forces of attraction, the water will be converted into gaseous state.
