Secularism means that state(here state means nation) will not promote any religion. ... The primary difference between the American and Indian secularism is that in the American secularism, the state does not intervene in religious affairs, but in the Indian secularism, the state can intervene and it often does.

Indian union is not legal agreement between different states , states don't have right to secede where as in US federal system its possible . in US each state has its constitution where as India has a single constitution .
