The most immediate effect is acid rain, caused by sulphur dioxide reacting with atmospheric gases to create sulphuric acid. This kills crops and burns people and livestock.

The larger, long term effect is a shift in rainfall patterns. Carbon dioxide and methane from industrial pollution stay in the atmosphere for decades and warm the planet, making the atmosphere become more turbulent (move faster). This causes rainfall to move to different places, so places where it used to rain a lot will receive less rain. And places where it used to rarely rain will receive more.

Both effects are dangerous because by causing farmland to die, they threaten our food supply.
