How is it possible that the north pole of a small compass needle can be attracted by the geographic north pole, but not large bar magnets present all around the world?

It's because the needle in compass is free to move

Whereas the bar magnets aren't free to move

If you tie a bar magnet to a thread and hang it

Then the bar magnet is free to move and the magnet will point in North Direction

They can, if suspended freely ! You can do an activity for the same. Take a magnet and a thread. Tie the magnet to the thread. Tie the thread to a place where the magnet can suspend freely. You'll notice that the magnet will face towards the north.
