how is jute fiber removed from dried jute stalks

The dried jute is tied into bundles and submerged into running water, it is soaked for up to 20 days, this is called retting. After the jute stalks are well soaked they are removed from the water and hit with a wooden hammer to loosen the fibres from the stalks.
