Kanchenjunga range is not just the third highest mountain in the world, but also a sacred entity in Sikkim. Its five peaks symbolise the five treasures―Gold, Silver, Gems, food grains and religious texts. The mountain is so venerated that even today the peak is not scaled by mountaineers, respecting local sentiments.

Kanchenjunga is derived from the Sanskrit word "Kanchana Ganga" - Kanchana means gold and Ganga is the river which flows in the region. The river shines like gold and hence the name was given to the mountain. This is the 3rd highest peak in the world and highest peak of West Bengal.
