★Key is a taxonomical aid which is used identify and classify organisms on the basis of their similarities and differences

★In Key,a pair of contrasting characters which are known as a couplet

★Each character is called a lead

There are two types of Keys:

I.Indented Key:

Pair of characters are taken but are regulated by sub phylum levels which leads in cancelling of one trait, thus classifying the organism. It is also known as Yolked Key

II.Bracket Key:

Though two characters are taken, they aren't divided by subphylum levels but are given a code

Hello Dost ☺

Answer :

Key is a taxonomical aid used for identification of plants and animals based on the similarities and dissimilarities.

The keys are based on contrasting characters generally in a pair called couplet. Selection of one character leads to rejection of another character while identifying a particular species or genera or family and so on.

For example presence or absence of hair on body can give a clue if an animal belongs to mammals or not.

Separate taxonomic keys are required for each taxonomic category such as family, genus and species for the purpose of identification.

Thanks ❤
