Main causes of land degradation are as follows —

1 . Large scale deforestation.

2 . Overgrazing of pasture by cattle, sheep, goat.

3 . Faulty methods of farming like - fallowing, untimely and over irrigation.

4 . Increased salinity and alkalinity of soil due to over irrigation.

5 . Urban and industrial waste disposal cause both land and water pollution.

6 . By mineral processing which involves grinding of stones , e. g. for cement, ceramics, etc., industries generate fine dust in atmosphere. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Preventive measures taken for land degradation are as follows -

1 . Afforestation and selective cutting of trees.

2 . Protection of the existing forest cover development of the shelter belts . It also checks desertification .

3 . Growing grass or bushes for stabilizing sand dunes .

5 . Soil erosion can be checked by planting vegetation .

6 . Construction of check dams to reduce the fury of floods .

7 . Adopt scientific farming method .

8 . Control of mining activities .

9 . Treatment of urban and industrial wastes before its disposal .
