Lighter, positively charged particles form at the top of the cloud. Heavier, negatively charged particles sink to the bottom of the cloud. When the positive and negative charges grow large enough, a giant spark - lightning - occurs between the two charges within the cloud.

ANSWER - Lightening is caused by discharge of electrical energyhas built up inside a thundercloud . During a thunderstorm, a process which involves such things are -vertical wind and different size droplet causes electrical charges to build up the various parts in the cloud . When this charge become powerful enough , they discharge using a stroke of lighting.
