The lithosphere is Earth's outermost layer, composed of rocks in the crust and upper mantle that behave as brittle solids. The rigid lithosphere sits on top of the asthenosphere, a layer of the mantle in which rocks are hot and deformable.

- It is made up of rocks and minerals and covered with thick layer of soil.
- It is not smooth surface but has high mountains, plateaus, low plains deep valleys and very deep basins which are filled with water.
- Many of these features are shaped by wind and water.
