Magnesium atom has two electrons in its outermost shell. It loses two electrons and forms stable octet. On the other hand, chlorine has seven electrons in its outermost shell and it requires one more electron to complete its octet. The two electrons lost by a magnesium atom are gained by chlorine atom to produce a magnesium ion and chloride ion.
