magnesium donates 2 electron and oxygen accepts those two electrons thus forming cation and anion respectively.

Hence an electrovalent bond is developed between them forming Magnesium Oxide

Hello dear,

● Formation of MgO -
- MgO is ionic compound formed by Mg2+ cation & O2- anion.
- Magnesium has electronic configuration [Ne] 3s2 .
- It loses two electrons to form stable octet of Mg2+ cation.
- Oxygen has electronic configuration [He] 2s2 2p4 .
- It accepts two electrons from Mg to form stable octet of O2- anion.
- Mg2+ & O2- combine to form MgO.

Hope this helps you..
