A country extends its power and influence by use of its military force or other means and, thereby, colonises places outside of its own geographical territory. This policy is known as imperialism. In centuries gone by, Britain, France, Portugal and The Netherlands were the biggest practitioners of imperialism. The main motive in conquering distant lands was trade.
One result of foreign powers invading countries in Asia and Africa was the modernisation of the local population in these countries as the invaders came from advanced nations. Modernity in dress, lifestyle, education, medicine and technology was adopted by people who had become subjects of the imperialists.
Some say, today we in developing countries are victims of economic imperialism with the use of modern equipment and state of the art gadgets of convenience that we buy from multinational companies.
