Manufacturing of nitric acid by Ostwald process. ... The Ostwald process converts ammonia to nitric acid and involves two steps. In step 1, ammonia is oxidized to form nitric oxide and also nitrogen dioxide. Then in step 2, the nitrogen dioxide that was formed is absorbed in water.

Preperation of HNO3 by Ostwelds process

Firstly ;

NH3 is taken from Haber's process'

And O2 in taken in large amount

the ratio of O2 and NH3 is (10:1)

Stage 1(Catalytic Chamber)

4NH3 + 5O2 → 4NO + 6H2O  ( Temp. 800°C and catalyst platinum )

Stage 2(Cooling Tower)

NO (cooled at 50°C)

Stage 3(Oxidation Chamber)

2NO + O2 → 2NO2

Stage 4 (Absorption Chamber)

4NO2 + O2 + 2H20 → 4HNO3  (Dil.)

Remember:

Quartz stone is used in absorption chamber to reduce the heat loss due to radiation.

Hope you will understand;

Thanks;
