the energy of lightning breaks nitrogen molecule and enable their atoms to combine with oxygen. these dissolve in rain forming nitrates.

The enormous energy of lightningbreaks nitrogen molecules and enables their atoms to combine withoxygen in the air forming nitrogenoxides. These dissolve in rain, forming nitrates, that are carried to the earth.Atmospheric nitrogen fixationprobably contributes some 5– 8% ofthe total nitrogen fixed.
