Nitrogen is so vital because it is a major component of chlorophyll, the compound by which plantsuse sunlight energy to produce sugars from water and carbon dioxide (i.e., photosynthesis). It is also a major component of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins.

Nitrogen is important for plants as the nitrogen fixed by the leguminous plants to grow and is stored in them as plant protein. when the plant dies, the fix nitrogen is released into the soil for my improving its fertility.
