The primary function of the respiratory system is to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Inhaled oxygen enters the lungs and reaches the alveoli. ...Oxygen passes quickly through this air-blood barrier into the blood in the capillaries. Similarly, carbon dioxidepasses from the blood into the alveoli and is then exhaled.

Haemoglobin present in RBC is respiratory pigment in Human being which transport Oxygen molecule. When this oxygen is used then blood becomes deoxygenated as it now contains CO2. As CO2 is dissolved in water so it is transported in dissolved form in blood.
