Oxygen is transported throughout the body via hemoglobin in the red blood cells. Hemoglobin is the protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen to cells and carbon dioxide to the lungs.

Oxygen transport and exchange provide the necessary oxygen to the body. This process is called respiration. Air is breathed in through the mouth and nose and after various processes it enters the blood through diffusion.

The RBCs contain a red coloured iron containing pigment called haemoglobin which binds to oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin.  Oxygen gets bound to haemoglobin in the lung surface and gets dissociated at the tissues. Each haemoglobin molecule can carry four molecules of oxygen.

The other 3% is transported in a dissolved state through plasma.
