Answer:

Ozone - both beneficial and damaging:-

Ozone is one of the strongest oxidising agents present in the environment and it contains three molecules of oxygen . Ozone molecule is triatomic and it is unstable in nature.

OZONE - BENEFICIAL:-

  1. Ozone layer which is present in the stratosphere is beneficial because it protects human beings from the harmful ultraviolet radiations (UV radiations) coming from the sun.
  2. The ozone layer absorbs the UV rays coming from the sunlight ,and hence protects the human beings and other living creatures from the side effects of the UV radiations.

OZONE - HARMFUL:-

  1. When we consider the ozone gas in the lower layer of atmosphere, it behaves as a greenhouse gas.
  2. It causes respiratory problems too when it is inhaled in a large quantity.
  3. It also affects the health of plants by causing discolouration of the leaves.
  4. Ozone layer depletion is one of the major problems and it causes ozone hole in the atmosphere which provides a direct pathway for the UV rays to enter the Earth.

Precautions to be taken to preserve the OZONE layer:-

  1. Prevent or reduce the use of chlorofluorocarbons. The chief emitters of these gases is air conditioners. They get accumulated in the stratosphere where chlorofluorocarbons break down to give chlorine. This chlorine reacts with ozone molecules ,leading to the depletion of the ozone layer
  2. Prevent or reduce the use of chlorofluorocarbons. The chief emitters of these gases is air conditioners. They get accumulated in the stratosphere where chlorofluorocarbons break down to give chlorine. This chlorine reacts with ozone molecules ,eating to the depletion of the ozone layer Reducing vehicle exhausts or using biofuels like hydrogen and biodiesel - power vehicles.
