How is PCl3 a Lewis Acid ?

Phosphorus trichloride has a lone pair, and therefore can act as a Lewis base. For example with the Lewis acidsBBr3 it forms a 1:1 adduct, Br3B−−+PCl3.

For the PCl5 Lewis structure we first count the valence electrons for the PCl5 molecule using the periodic table. ... Remember when you draw the Lewis structure for PCl5 that Phosphorous (P) is in Period 3 on the Periodic table. This means that it can hold more than 8 valence electrons.

Hope this helps u..

Phosphorus trichloride is a lewis acid.

  • The species which can accept electrons are called lewis acid and the species which can donate its electron are lewis bases.
  • Phosphorus has lone pair of electrons in phosphorus trichloride.
  • But the high electronegative chlorine atoms attract the electron density from the P atom. Thus the electron density of the P atom decreases and it can accept electrons. Thus it acts as a lewis acid.
