The Peninsular plateau is a tableland composed of old crystalline, igneous and metamorphic rocks.
It was formed due to the breaking and drifting of the Gondwana land and thus make it a part of the oldest landmass.
The two broad divisions of this plateau are:- i) Central Highland
ii) Deccan Plateau
One characteristic of central highland :-
It lies in the north of Narmada river and is wider in the west and narrower in the east.
One characteristic of Deccan Plateau:-
It lies in the south of Narmada river and is higher in the west and slopes gently eastwards.
These are divided into:-
a) The Central highland
b) The Deccan plateau
a) CENTRAL PLATEAU:- This Pleatue can be found in the north of the Narmada river. It also encompasses the larger part of the Malwa plateau. The rivers in this area pass from southwest to northeast which symbolizes the inclination of this region.
DECCAN PLATEAU:- This Pleatue can be found in the south of Narmada river which is triangular in shape. The Satpura range forms its northern part. The Kaimur Hills, Mahadev, and Maikal mountain forms its eastern part. The inclination of the Deccan plateau is from West to East. It stretches from north-east which comprises Meghalaya, Karbi and the North Cacher hills.
