The main difference between the formation of coal and petroleum is as follows:-) #petroleum are formed with the deposition of sea animals under high pressure and high temperature whereas the coal is formed with the deposition of plants and trees under high temperature and high pressure.

Coal (carbonized plant matter) is formed from Marsh Swampy - Plant based Environment while Petroleum (petro-rock, oleum - oil) is formed from Organisms (mainly Marine Environment in origin).
