coal gas ,obtained from the destructive distillation of coal can be converted into petroleum by the process known as Fischer tropsch process. Fischer tropsch process or synthesis is a set of chemical reaction that converts a mixture of carbon monooxide and hydrogen into liquid hydrocarbon mainly alkanes.
(2n+1)H2+nCO-------- CnH2n+2 + nH2O
the conversion of CO to alkanes in the presence of hydrogen involves hydrogenolysis of C--O bond and the formation of C--C bond. this process takes place in the presence of transition metal catalyst (cobalt, iron, ruthenium, and nickle) at a temperature range 150-300C .
Fischer tropsch plants associated with coal convert it into gaseous reactants i.e CO and H2. this conversion is called gasification . Coal based fischer tropsch plants can produce a petrolium substitue that is used as synthetic fuel and as synthetic lubricating oil.
hope my answer help u
