In Periscope plane mirrors are used to fold light so that image of an object can be brought down to a lower level. it is used for observing enemy movements from trenches without any danger of being seen . sailors on submarines use Periscopes to see things above the water level.

Periscope has a "Z" like shape with both right angles between the upper and lower horizontal arms with the vertical arm of the periscope.
In those two right angle sections, two plane mirrors are placed at an angle of 45°.
In this way the light enters from the upper horizontal arm and gets reflected by those two mirrors and comes out from the lower horizontal arm.
And we can easily watch the things which are situated in upper altitudes with the help of the periscope.
