When it is mixed with water, crystals of gypsum(CaSO4.2H2O ) are produced and set into hard mass. Plaster of paris is prepared by heating calcium sulfate dihydrate, or gypsum, to 120–180 °C (248–356 °F). ... When water is added to the plaster of Paris powder it rehydrates (absorbs water) and quickly hardens.
