A common method used to estimatepoverty in India is the income or consumption levels.if the income or consumption falls below a given minimum level ,then the family is said to be below the poverty line. A minimum level of food requirement, footwear, clothing, fuel , medical requirement is used to determinesubsistence.

In India , the concept of poverty line is used as a measure of absolute poverty . So BPL (Below poverty line) is a line which demarcates the people , who are living below the poverty line from those , who are living above the poverty line .
