the President of India is elected by an electoral college consisting of only the elected members of lok sabha and rajya sabha and legislative assemblies of the states nominated members of any house to not participate in the election of the president the election is held in accordance with the single transferable vote system of proportional representation.
Powers and functions of the president:
1. being head of the union executive all the administrative decisions are taken in her his name. he makes all the important appointments including those the prime minister council of ministers governor chief justice and judges of the supreme court and high court.
2. the president can summon or prorogue and address the both houses of the parliament he she can dissolve the lok sabha before the expiry of its normal term if he is advised to do so by the prime minister. no Bill passed by both the house of the parliament becomes a law without his consent.
3. the annual budget of the country is presented in the parliament in the name of president all money bills also required his her approval before they are introduced in lok sabha. he appoints the member of finance commission.
4. all the judges of the supreme court and high court including the chief justice are appointed by the president.
5. in case of extraordinary situations in the country or in one or more States the president has been entrusted with certain emergency powers.
