Rainbows are formed as a result of dispersion of the light or preferably sunlight.

  • When the sunlight enters the water droplets present in the air in the form of moisture, it bends as it enters the denser water medium from the rarer air medium. As a result, it splits into the light of different wavelengths.
  • They are violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red or also known as VIBGYOR.
  • One must remember that rainbows are formed in nature as a result of dispersion and not because of the total internal reflection.
