Actually plants get their energy from the sun, not the production of oxygen. But your basic theme is correct. Plants get their energy by sitting in the sunshine as the wind blows by. Animals must go seek out their energy. Hence the 'intelligence' of plants. The 'programs' running in their dna, & structures created by those programs do not have to be remotely as quick or complex as animals do. A plant may sway slowly to follow the sun over the course of a day. This would be ungodly slow for an animal. Even the name 'Animal' comes from anima - which means 'breath' or 'soul' The wind is sufficient breath for a plant, and Animal must draw breath into itself. So the answer is yes. Plant intelligence is slow and simple compared to animal intelligence, and while this is not per se based on respiration, it is quite firmly based on speed & energy the life process requires. Think of animals as miniature forest fires. You COULD call a Whale more spiritual than a Sequoia because above its genetic intelligence, it's structures must process sense data and motion on a much higher activity level. If spiritual evolution is defined as a higher/faster/ more complex degree of sensory response, then a human is clearly more 'evolved' than an Orchid. Of course if we are comparing Orchids to celibate monks or nuns there's a bit of a snag. The Orchid may successfully be passing on it's genes. Whereas, by virtue of celibacy, the monk or nun are failing.
