Smooth endoplasmic reticulum :-

It helps in synthesis of lipids and steroids. Smooth ER also serves as a storage space for enzymes that detoxify lipid-soluble drugs and other harmful compounds.
Ribosomes are absent here
Rough endoplasmic reticulum :-

The ribosomes attached to the membrane of rough endoplasmic reticulum play an important role in the synthesis and packaging of proteins.
Ribosomes are present.

Heya friend !!

Rough ER is different from smooth ER in having ribosomes (protein units ) on its surface. This is what makes its surface rough and bumpy.

*Functions :-
The Ribosomes present in RER are the structures responsible for making proteins which are further sent to the lumen .
It is also responsible for making phospholipids which make up the membranes of cells.

Hope that helps !
