Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum or RER helps in the transport of proteins which are synthesized by ribosomes in their surface
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum or SER synthesize lipids and steroids.
SER is involved in the process of detoxification.
RER produces digestive enzymes of lysosomes.

Both the smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum help in the production and storage of proteins The main difference is that one contains ribosomes on it and the other does not. The rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) has ribosomes on its surface. ... The SER helps in the storage of proteins and lipids.
