Makar Sankranti or Sankranti marks the first day of sun’s transit into the zodiac Makra (Capricorn). Makar Sankranti is celebrated in India to give reverence to Sun Deity. It also marks the end of the winter solstice and commencement of summers.
It is a Hindu festival and celebrated in different ways in different regions. In Gujarat, people celebrate the festival by flying colorful kites. In Tamil Nadu this day is known as Thai Pongal, Assamese name it Magh Bihu and Lohri in Punjab (Lohri is celebrated a day before the Sankranti).
This year for Sankranti Celebration I went to my village Punjab. The celebration started with Lohri wherein the people arrange a huge bonfire and the whole village was decorated beautifully with flowers and lightings.
The Lohri bonfire is lit in the evening. Everybody gathers around the bonfire pray to god and the celebration starts with folk songs and dance. It was really good to see the whole village under one roof and sharing laughter together. Festivals bring the hearts closer.
