As the method was crude therefore images don't seem so realistic as they are today
Most of them are hand made whereas today terracotta are kiln based.
Similarities:
whether it is Indus valley terracotta or present day terracotta theme remains same i.e. toys cups etc
Today also terracotta proves to be less expensive option as compared to other options eg metal sculptures
