Sodium is shiny, soft an alkali metal that reacts violently with water, or even humid aid to produce bright golden flames, sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas.
Chlorine is a toxic gas that can function as an oxidising agent, and has been used for chemical warfare and for killing bacteria. It is a very reactive yellow-green gas.
With the reaction of these two, we get sodium chloride which is very inert and does not take part in any violent reactions. It is a white, crystalline solid that is brittle and is essential in human diet.
