Sodium Chloride is an ionic compound which consists of Sodium ion and Chloride ion. In solid form bond between these two is very strong. But in water the ions become free and move randomly. These ions are charge carriers and thus responsible for electricity conduction.

The bond b/w sodium and chlorine is ionic or electrovalent which is formed by transfer of electrons from sodium to chlorine . As sodium has one electron in its valence shell and chlorine have seven so sodium give its one electron to chlorine and chlorine gains one electron in order to acquire noble gas configuration . In water sodium chloride ionise and the ions are responsible for conduction of electric current.
