Answer:

SOIL POLLUTION : Contamination of soil by undesirable substances.

Factors affecting soil pollution are:-

• Excessive use of fertilisers, pesticides

• Excretory products of animals and untreated sewage system.

• Plastic waste.

• Salination of soil.

SOIL CONSERVATION : Protection of soil against erosion and degradation.

• Methods of soil conservation: -

  • Afforestation – roots of the plant hold the soil firmly
  • Terrace farming – followed in hilly areas. Farmers build steps called terrace. It prevents the topsoil from being washed away.
  • Crop rotation – leguminous crop in between the main cash crop.
  • Building dams and embarkments.

Causes of soil pollution and ways of conserving soil are given below:

Soil pollution causes:

It is the pollution in which the soil gets contaminated with excess amount of toxic substances. Following are few causes of how soil pollution occurs:

•While growing different crops and other vegetations, excessive use of pesticides and insecticides leads to pollution.

•The solid waste from the industries and factories are often not disposed properly and thus it leads to soil pollution.

•Waste products and other wastes which comes out from the household works are not disposed correctly and lack of proper garbage disposing system may result in soil pollution.

Ways to conserve soil:

1. Afforestation is a very good way to conserve soil. It is planting large number of trees in large areas.

2. Overgrazing must be strictly avoided.

3. Ways to prevent soil erosion should be implemented. For example: constructing dams across the rivers can save the soil from erosion.

4. Various practices of agricultural methods such as the rotation of crops, strip cropping, contour ploughing should be practiced.
