Speed and Pathlength are Scalar quantities because they are independent of direction. As in the case of Circular Motion, the speed of the body may be constant irrespective of direction. However, velocity keeps on changing since the direction changes. Similarly, after one complete rotation, path length covered will be equal to the circumference of the circle but Displacement (the shortest distance between two points) will be zero (since dependent on direction). Here, for Speed and Velocity, it could be said that Speed is the rate of change of Distance but Velocity is the rate of change of Displacement.
