A reflex action is an automatic and rapid (spontaneous) response to a stimulus. It is a spontaneous reaction.

The structural and functional unit that carries our reflex action is called a reflex arc. It consists of a receptor, sensory nerve (afferent),spinal Cord and Inter-neuron,motor nerve (efferent) & effector.

Reflex arcs evolved in animals because the brain has slow thinking process comparatively. In some lower animals the complex neuron network needed for thinking may be absent or not well developed. Hence reflex arcs have been evolved as efficient ways of functioning in the absence of the true through processes. However, in spite of the presence of complex neuron networks, reflex arcs continue to be more efficient for quick responses.

Spinal Cord is related to efficiency of Reflex arc - Reason:

  • In the reflex action the brain and the spinal cord are the key controller of the reflex movements.
  • Reflex action is spontaneous response to the external stimuli. The unit which controls reflex action is called reflex arc.
  • The reflex arc consists of some components like sensory neurons, motor neurons, nerve centre, receptor organ, associated neuron and effector neurons.
  • The synaptic connections are formed in spinal cord which is called the nerve centre. Associated neurons are also found in spinal cord.
