In Carius method, a known mass of organic compound with sulphur is heated in the presence of excess fuming nitric acid in a sealed Carius tube. The sulphur presented in this organic compound is converted into sulphuric acid. This sulphuric acid is treated with excess of barium chloride solution. Barium sulphate is formed and it gets precipitated. This is then filtered, washed, dried, and weighed. This percentage gives the sulphur. Thus, this process is known as estimation of sulphur by Carius method.
