A ‘lightning rod’ system does essentially two things. First, it ‘bleeds’ electrical charge from the air by having a region of ionized air around the sharp tip whenever the electric field gets larger than normal. (Some commercial rods have a small amount of a radioactive element included that further increases the ionization of the air around the tip.) But the most dramatic use of the system is to provide a ‘safe’ path for lightning to travel to ground. Without the rod, lightning is likely to strike the chimney etc. and start a fire as it travels through the structure to ground.

a lightning conductor specially consists of a flat thick strip of a metal, sharped like a stike at the top. It is ground in such a manner that its top is projected out while the lower end is joined to a metal plate which is buried deep inside the ground when lightning strikes , the lightning conductor makes a passage for the entire charge to pass to the ground without damaging the building
