Thermometer have temperature measuring scale which have a bulb in its lower part.

In that bulb there is Mercury.

This Mercury expands on heating and on cooling contract. Thus, if heat is given to it if will expand and move up and vice-versa.

The scale present over there allow the user to note the level of mercury and get known about the temperature of a body.
