This is according to Newton's third law of motion that every action has equal and opposite reaction.

Imagine an object attached to a string facing downwards. The body is attracted by the gravity and therefore exerts a force downwards. So, by newton's third law of motion there will be an equal and opposite force in form of tension upwards. Therefore the tension is related to momentum of bodies.
